PAST PROJECTS

Hillview Intercultural Community Workshops 2024

Enjoy our workshops

The FREE community creative writing program at Hillview Intercultural Community Centre sponsored by the City of Canning is our main event. During in-person and online workshops we studied and discussed different poetic forms (e.g. haiku, sonnet) and devices (e.g. the line, sonics, etc) before encouraging each other to create or develop poetry inspired by ideas, memories, research, stories, and personal responses to prompts provided. The program featured encouragement and opportunities to share, publish, and perform works created.

Haiku Harvest 2024

Refine, celebrate, and develop your haiku works-in-progress via FREE monthly online feedback workshops which run via Zoom from 6-8pm AWST every final Sunday each month in 2024. Haiku is always evolving popular Japanese art-form which remains widely debated and contested.

Come join our community haiku knowledge and skill-building collaborative!

These online meet-ups were designed to provide community-generated supportive mentorship through which participants support and guide each other to achieve their creative writing goals. As with all Poetry Lovers Perth workshops, the education gaol is to encourage and support growth and learning. Attendees determine what kind of feedback they are open to receiving (e.g. constructive criticism and/or encouragement) and all participants are allocated an equal share of feedback time.

Email Jake Dennis (jakedennis@hotmail.com) to register for future haiku workshops.

Your Story, Your Stage – WA Youth Week Showcase 2025

Young Storytellers & Poets

In early 2025, Centre for Stories and the Blue Room Theatre sought expressions of interest from youth between 18-24 to participate in their Storytelling on Stage program โ€“ an exciting program that transforms personal narratives and poetry into captivating performances. Centre for Storiesโ€™ youth program The Spark, in partnership with the Blue Room Theatre, was thrilled to announce this unique theatrical storytelling and poetry initiative. Under the guidance of industry professionals Jake Dennis and Ange Yang, participants learned how to transform real-life experiences into engaging stage performances. Stage experience was not required. Young storytellers and poets were encouraged to bring their story or poetry and a dash of courage and we helped with the rest. This program was fully funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and Healthway which made it completely free for participants.

Eight individuals completed this supercharged Centre for Stories storytelling and poetry program and had their final performance at The Blue Room Theatre in the Perth Cultural Centre! The program supported diverse voices and perspectives from young people of all backgrounds, including but not limited to those identifying as First Nations, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, LGBTQIA+, living with a disability and/or experiencing financial hardship. The program included the following events:

  • Poetry Performance with Jake Dennis: Saturday 22 March, 12-2pm @ The Blue Room Theatre (KAOS Room)
  • Storytelling with Ange Yang: Saturday 29 March, 12-2pm @ The Blue Room Theatre (Old Office)
  • Performance Masterclass with Jake Dennis: Saturday 5 April, 2-4pm @ The Blue Room Theatre (KAOS Room)
  • Tech Rehearsal/Masterclass with Ange Yang: Thursday 10 April @ The Blue Room Theatre (Studio)
  • Your Story, Your Stage Showcase: Saturday 12 April from 4pm @ The Blue Room Theatre (Studio)

Workshop participants learned fundamental storytelling, narrative & poetry techniques, and theatre performance tips; improved their public speaking and confidence; bonded with new people while sharing fascinating and moving stories from their communities; and enjoyed an unique opportunity to share their experiences, stories, and poetry on stage.
